Youth Outdoor Program

Outdoor leadership is the leader in wilderness. Outdoor can lead a way to define your new life with nature. Talking about nature, if you are looking deep into Nature, and then you will understand everything. Nature provides everything to both humans and animals. Nature makes your worries melt away.  Nature instantly relax you and make you feel unbelievably, grateful for this beautiful planet we get to call home. It’s not too late to appreciate nature.

I have already experienced outdoor trip with my friends and my teachers. Now, I want to let other youth in Cambodia to experience and feel what is like to be outdoors. By doing that, I’ve joined a project called, Outdoor Leadership Program. Our goal is to help Cambodia youth experience trekking and surviving in the wilderness. We also want to create a passion of trekking for Cambodian youth rather than riding polluted vehicles at the trekking area. We do want to giving opportunities and successfully motivate students and youths to go out into the wilderness, camp, and trekking to fully understand about nature and the environment. That includes doing workshop, social media interaction and going on trips. The reason we want to do this because most of Cambodian youth don’t really going out and spend time with nature.

There are four big categories that we want to give out to them. There are Leadership Skills, Medical skills, Nature appreciation / Environmental stewardship and Wilderness skills. Those categories are being organized and written by our students based on their experience and knowledge from their learning. We are students. We never went out and teach other people. During the project, we have learned how to keep people engaged with our topic, having confidence at speaking toward people, open and close the conversation, what makes a good workshop and some communication skills. Learning from our teachers is not enough. We also doing some Skype with other outdoor leader from different countries and interview them.

Personally, I want to share these ideas to a lot of people. I believe that, people around the world want to understand and protect nature. In the area where I lived, I have shared this idea to my sisters and other of my neighbor. Being outdoors is fun and you can take care of nature while you have fun.

S-I-M-P-L-E Machine / Round 5

Everyday, people use modern machine to help improve their work or make their work easier. Mostly, they define machine as the tool that use electricity and modern tool, but tools like hammer or axes are also call machine, but it’s just the different type of machine that you use the force from yourself more than it can do for you. For this round, I’ve not been at the class much, but I kind of understand and know what is my class content. In the past seven weeks, we have learn about Simple Machine! What’s a simple machine? Simple machine is any basic mechanical device for applying a force  which include wedge, plane and lever. For this topic, I’ve learn and understand the content from a website call ck12.org, but I also learn and do some research from the other website too.

To understand clearly about the content, my teacher have divide us into team and let us do some small project. In this project, we are making a simple machine and use whatever material that we have in our school. My team have three members and we decide to make pulley! Pulleys are simple machine that lifting some heavy stuff to make human easier.

These are the photos of Pulley that I have made with my teammates.

វេយ្យាករណ៍ខ្មែរ / Khmer Grammar Round 3

This round we have been learned about Khmer grammar. Khmer grammar is almost the same as English grammar. We have pronoun, noun, adjective, verb and more just like English grammar.

Here is the link to access my Khmer grammar.

Khmer Grammar

Robotic / Round 3

Robot means the machine that we made up and program to make it run. When we talk about coding, I really don’t like it. You know the feeling when you don’t know how to do cod and you end up with joining Robotic exploration.

In the past seven weeks, we have been learn about what is robot and how we build it. We were trying hard to build our robot and learn how to code. Oh no! Code! We divide the students into two groups and each group have five members. In each group, they divide them self into two groups. One is work on project and one is work on the robot.

Oops, I forgot to tell you this. In each year, the First Lego League have a robot competition ( If you want to know more, click on the link and read more 🙂 ) This year was about “Into Orbit”. Space is one of the most interesting subject to learn. In this competition goal are we complete the mission and find one problem in space. The problem doesn’t need to be related to the mission. The mission is the mission for our robot to complete. For example, the first mission is they want you to push the satellite to the sky and you need to program your robot and push it up. On mid-March, which means March 12, we will be leaving to Singapore for robot competition.

The goal of our exploration is not to win the competition, but to show our hard working and our teamwork. The core value of our team is to respect, communicate, solution before complain and help each other. We want to enjoy together and not get angry because of something.

Decimal / Round 3

A decimal is a fraction that is written in the form of a dot followed by one or more numbers which represent tenths, hundredths, and so on: for example .5, .51, .517. …simple math concepts, such as decimals and fractions”. Decimal is not a hard lesson to learn. I like decimal because the multiple and division decimal is not so hard as the fraction. Do y’all know who create Decimal? If no, you will get to know it today because I will tell you now.

John Napier was the one who creates decimal. He was a Scottish landowner known as a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer. Decimal fractions were first developed and used by the Chinese at the end of the 4th century BC, and then spread to the Middle East and from there to Europe. He was born in 1550 and died on April 4, 1617.

“I Am From” / Round 3

Do you ever notice or wonder about the history of your own name? Let me share the story about my name.

My name means mercy or pity in my language which is Khmer. In Thai, my name means please. Well, it’s mean similar meaning between my language and thai. In my school many people trying to match me with my name like “ Oh, her name mean pity or mercy. Does she feel pity to other or not?” or “ Ohh, why do your parents put this name for you? It’s nothing relate with you. You are lucky enough. Not really pity for you”. They can say this, but in lavian my name mean crown. I want to tell all my friend that I have power because my name mean crown. You will regret in someday by making fun with my name. I don’t know why I’m saying this.

This name is come from “ Prom Vihear Thor”. This is a Khmer advise that teaching student about the good things and to have a feeling in our mind that we need to give love, pity and happiness to other. There are four Prom Vihear Thor which are, Meta, Kakrona, Mutita and Opikha. As I said the same thing, Kakrona mean mercy and pity. Have pity feeling in your head a feeling that god have give you.

For me, I don’t want to have the same name with others because I feel like…. people will compare me with that people who share the same name with me. I don’t like being compare. I never believe myself that I’m a better person, so that’s the reason I don’t like being compare. My name exist when I was born. My mom is the one who decide to put this name for me. Like I said at the first time, it’s mean mercy or pity in Khmer. During my birth was the struggling day of my mother. Also, I’m the youngest in my family and my dad pity me for being the last. I don’t understand why. The last reason is I wasn’t born in the hospital or in my house or my relative house. I was born in a place where you never expect. I don’t want to tell you where is it.

“Does you feel pity for others?” This is the question that my friend ask me. I wonder why those people need to know and compare the name with the people. For sure! My name match with my attitude because I feel pity for some animal and some other people like begger or homeless people. Give love and happiness to homeless people is like helping a million people. I would also give the food to some stray animals and help some small animals like ant, grasshopper….. In class, I always help them out with their homework or their work in class. Everyday I’m trying to act myself to match with my name. It’s so difficult when you have the name that mean polite or pity. You sometimes get bullied by other people because of your name.

“Why your parents decide to put this name for you? You should have a different name than this name, Kakrona” My friend joking. I don’t mind them because it’s real. I was born in a place that you’ll never believe. I don’t want to tell what it is. If I have a chance, I want to change a name that is cooler than this, but it doesn’t have any meaning. Well, I like my name now. It’s not bad, but I don’t want people to dig into the history of my name like now, I’m writing and explain about my name. In conclusion, I like my name. I don’t want to change my name and I always want to have the name that my parents give it for me.

In our class, we also make a poem about our name.

“I Am From” Poem

Adapted by Levi Romero

Inspired by “Where I’m From” by George Ella Lyon

I am from a black blanket, from a red hammock and my blue two seats bicycle . I am from the up wooden and down brick house that smell dew drops water every morning. I am from the crown of thorns. The mango tree, the short coconut tree whose long gone lims I remember as if they were my own.

I’m from loving and phumben time, from my parents and my older sisters. I am from a joke team and small party and from family backyard picnic.

I’m from paradise and advise of life and birthday song made up by me which is misheard lyrics, buffalo eat a dog.

I’m from older respecter. I’m from a small room and pure khmer blood, greatest people and a mixture of healthy vegetable.

From a struggling man who work hard for his children and his family. Inside my photos album were recorded all memories of my family. A family photo without my first sister made me remembering a time when I hike to a mountain with my greatest people. Flashback smile on those photos make me watering my eyes, I smile again with hope and happy.

Carbon / Round 3

Carbon is a virtually important molecule in the carbon cycle. Proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates and other molecules essential to life contain carbon. Let me explain some of the words. Nucleic acids are NA. DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid. Deoxyribonucleic acid is a molecule composed of two chains that coil around each other to form a double helix carrying the genetic instructions used in the growth, development, functioning, and reproduction of all known living organisms and many viruses. Lipids are fat. Carbohydrates are the food that you eat for your power and you energetic. Carbon is present in the atmosphere as the gas carbon dioxide ( CO2 ), which makes up approximately 0.04% of the atmosphere. If it also presents in the ocean & fresh water as dissolved carbon dioxide. Carbons are also present in rocks such as limestone ( Caco2 ).

The carbon cycle is the global moment of carbon between the abiotic environment including the atmosphere and ocean. The process that removes carbon dioxide from the air is photosynthesis. The processes that add carbon dioxide to the air are combustion and respiration. In the respiration are animal, plant and decomposing.

If carbon dioxide extinct we might have no oxygen. There will be no plant and living organism.

Oops, I forgot to tell you guy that we also do some experiment. It’s call Black Snake experiment.  Down here is the step how to do that experiment.

The Formula of Black Snake

  • 20 gram of sugar
  • One bowl of sand
  • 5 gram of baking soda
  • Some alcohol
  • A beaker
  • A lighter or match
  1. Pour the sand into the bowl
  2. Soak the sand with alcohol
  3. Keep it for a moment and mixed the sugar with baking soda
  4. Pour all the baking soda and sugar into the bowl of sand into a shape of a mountain
  5. Light the bowl up with the match and you can see the result

How is this work?

Alcohol catch the fire and it’s burning

Baking soda and sugar contain carbon, so when the fire burn it’s come up with carbon ash
